DAY 1

By Isaac Jennings

We started our Lander 4 Uganda 2026 journey leaving Richard Lander at 7am Sunday morning. On our journey to Gatwick we stopped at 2 rest stops. Once we reached Gatwick the long process of unloading and checking in all our suitcases began. Once through the gates we had some time to relax in the airport before boarding the plane – taking up nearly an entire section of the plane! Our expedition on the plane lasted almost 9 hours where we received 2 meals most notably breakfast at 3 in the morning. After a smooth landing in Entebbe and a few minor hiccups in customs we had to collect sort and load 110 suitcases and up to 110 other personal bags. This was mostly completed before everybody made it through the gates. Then we split into groups and made our way to Santa Maria Hotel. Whilst there, we spent our morning relaxing by the pool and playing games. Then we ate pizza by the pool and prepared to travel to the shopping mall. In the mall we spent time shopping in African supermarkets and traditional craft markets. After we returned to the hotel we had a small amount of downtime before we were surprised by the wonderful Pearl of Africa Choir who performed 2 songs for us enlightening our evening and bringing up spirits after everyone was tired from our long day of travel. Then we went for dinner where we ate an African buffet curated by the wonderful hotel staff. We celebrated Thomas O’s birthday by singing and eating our meal. After we finished eating, the birthday boy got a cake and a celebration. Then we had our first team meeting outlining the next few days. Finally, we finished the day with some more downtime and games to wind down ready for a well earned rest from our busy day.

Excited for the Chimpanzee sanctuary tomorrow!
