Day 23

This morning Kiera didn’t wake up as per usual and went down to breakfast in her pajamas. We had pancakes, watermelon, pineapple, scrambled eggs, banana and toasted tomato with a drizzle of honey to top the breakfast off. Some people enjoyed first, second and even thirds while some people only had a few bits. To top off breakfast there was warm coffee which was long awaited. After we came back to the room to finish getting ready but didn’t realise we needed to go down stairs for register at 8.15. At 8.30 we got on the open top tour bus and began our tour around Kampala while learning the history behind uganda and the kingdoms. The microphone had many failures and Jonah kept having to save the day. Our first stop was the tombs for the 4 previous kings of Buganda. The girls wearing trousers had to wrap a piece of fabric around their waist imitating a skirt and then all shoes were removed before entering the tomb. We sat inside for 45 minutes learning about the history of the 4 previous kings and the different clans and kingdoms in buganda and uganda as a whole. To exit the tomb the boys had to walk backwards to symbolise respect to the kings. This was then followed by an enjoyable lunch at the service station. We both enjoyed a sausage roll, ice cream and a cheeky mars bar. Our next stop was the biggest mosque in uganda. The girls had their head wrapped in all different coloured scarves, we were the “lucky” 2 who got the rainbow ones and enjoyed a look around the mosque learning about the religion and their praying routines. We climbed 280 stairs to the top of a tower where we were presented with a full 360 view of kampala. Our final destination was the kings palace. We were shown the grounds before entering the torture chambers. Here we learnt the horrific stories of how lives were ended and how many lives were lost. We witnessed bloody hand prints all over the walls, bullet holes covering the last chance of hope these people had escaping and water lines from where they were electrocuted when attempting escape. We ended our evening on a happy note with a lovely margarita pizza (some had more cheese than others….) and a refreshing coke and Fanta before having to pack our stuff up ready for a 5am wakeup tomorrow morning. Goodluck Kiera on waking up and goodluck Chloe on waking Kiera up!!!!
