Day 6

By Ozzy Wood

Today we woke up at 7am as usual in this school so far. The wake up playlist is starting to get repetitive but Hotel California is still a banger. Breakfast was toast, cereal and oddly vegetable samosas which is the best thing I’ve eaten here so far. After breakfast we set straight off by gathering tools and walking up to where the new farmhouse is going to be built as the Headteacher requested, to help guard the farm area. At the site there were lines set out showing where we need to dig trenches for foundations to be put in place later on. There were 16 of us on the job meaning that everyone could have plenty of water/rest breaks. We used hoes and pickaxes to take off the top layer and clear rocks and then people with shovels would scoop up the loose dirt and put it into a pile. We were at the site for about 3 hours before walking back. We had some chill time at the house where I watched a downloaded TV show on my ipad and had a very cold shower. Lunch was some sort of spaghetti, Matoke, vegetable curry and a watermelon which is usual for both lunch and dinner here. I had everything apart from Matoke and it was very good. The fruit here is unbelievably more fresh than it is in the UK. After lunch we had a little bit more time to chill out before the second stint of work began. For the pm session I decided to do chapati making which was so fun. Mumma Millie (the chef) set out a table with oil, water, flour, salt/sugar, carrot and onion with bowls for everyone to use. I won’t write the whole recipe out but after making the dough we split it up into 6 – 8 balls and then rolled them out into thin circles. The circles then went on the fryer with the oil and Courtney went and got honey which is also so much better than the UK’s honey. The chapati’s actually tasted pretty good and I’ll probably make more when I get home. After Chapati making we had time to make bead bracelets and socialise with the secondary schoolers who live here and tomorrow I think we’re doing the same with the primary schoolers. We had a lot of time before dinner so I went back in the shower for about a minute to cool off before getting some more rest. I’m trying to get as much rest as I can before the football tonight which starts at midnight. Dinner was potatoes, yam, pork curry and pineapple which was the first time we’ve had pork so far. After dinner we all sang happy birthday to Fin and Miss announced that we will be allowed to stay up and watch the football and even better we will have a chill day tomorrow after church. I’m writing this at half 8 and that’s the whole day so far so thanks for reading.
